2016 SAASL Season – Division 2 (Saturday)

Titans bring the three points home!

Despite not being at their best, the Titans remained undefeated and top of the League by securing their fifth win of the season today against a spirited Gleeson side who started well and matched the visiting Titans for much of the 90-minutes. Titans frontman Nicholas Lalli was causing all sorts of headaches for Gleeson regularly breaking through their defences. His persistence paid off in the 22nd minute when he whipped a ball across goal finding Kennet Silva who cleverly flicked the ball on target to net the Titans’ first. The restart saw the continuing midfield battle range on and it was not until the 76th minute that the Titans caught Gleeson on the break and bagged their second thanks to a clinical finish from Harry Kallis. To their credit, Gleeson kept pushing and clawed one back in the 88th minute. The momentum was theirs and they had the Titans on the back foot. A minute later, Bill Petropoulos made a great save nudging a high shot from the top corner onto the bar to deny a certain equaliser.

In the Reserves, the Titans were nothing short of ruthless punishing the home team 9-0 in arguably their best performance of the season. The visitors placed a strangle hold on the match from the first whistle and did not allow Gleeson any space or time on the ball. It took 10-minutes to net the first through a great header from Cezar Augusto. The second was a long range thunderbolt from Tom Overall. Teri Pappas and Marko Krnic added to the tally to give the Titans an unbeatable 4-0 lead at the break but the visitors were far from finished! The second half started as the first had ended with the Titans in complete control. Jimmy Moutzouris, John Dagas, Marko Krnic and Teri Pappas rounded off a brilliant performance by the Titans all netting goals in the second half to give the visitors their fourth and biggest win of the season. It was a flawless display by the second placed Titans who are maintaining the pressure and are only 2-points behind the League leading Red Blue Eagles.

The C’s played some great football today and recorded their second win of the season with a convincing 4-0 win. All goals came in the first and last 10-minutes of the game. Domenic Musci, with an arguably best on ground performance, scored a brace with his first a great solo run through the middle to slam the ball home. His second was a great finish meeting the ball from a powerful cross. The visitors took a 2-0 lead into the break and never looked in doubt to secure maximum points. The Titans almost bagged their third again courtesy of Domenic Musci, this time an audacious scissor kick just inside the box that was not to be. The Titans netted their third when Jonathan Lotfy found himself on the end of a long ball out wide. He rounded the last defender and cleverly curled the ball from just inside the box into the top corner giving the Gleeson keeper no chance. A minute later, player-coach James Avdoulas pounced on a miss clearance taking a touch and firing home from distance to give the visitors a great win.

Our best wishes go out to Harry Athanasopoulos and Andre Chaves who sustained injuries in the C’s and Seniors matches, respectively for a speedy and full recovery. All the best lads.
